Master of Laws (LLM)

 

​​​​​​AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE LLM PROGRAMME

The LLM programme aims to equip students with the current legal theoretical concepts and practical skills for mastery over relevant areas of law, to enable them deploy skills in legal research and advocacy, formulate ideas and insights both in written and oral presentations.

The objectives of the programme are to equip students to:

  1. Identify and construct logically valid legal arguments;
  2. Manipulate and apply abstract theoretical concepts in order to secure a better understanding of complex issues;
  3. Identify and recognise the importance of multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research;
  4. Critically, and succinctly summarise the key points of theoretical literature, legal and policy documents;
  5. Deploy skills in legal research and advocacy;
  6. Formulate ideas and insights both in written and oral presentations and in discussions; and
  7. Appreciate the social implications of law as a tool in aid of development. 

 

 PROGRESSION AND GRADUATION

Duration and Progression

The Master of Laws (LLM) programme is for a period of two years. The first and second years shall be a taught and research respectively.

 

Graduation Requirements

For the award of the LLM, the student must have:

  1. passed all courses;
  2. achieved a minimum of 47 credit hours;
  3. obtained a minimum pass mark of 50 % in any examination;
  4. obtained a minimum CWA of 55.00; and
  5. submitted and successfully defended a Thesis
